AIM To determine the oral health status and oral health impacts among UPNM first year cadets. OBJECTIVES 1. To assess the perceived oral health status, satisfaction with oral health and perceived need for treatment among first year cadets in UPNM 2. To assess their level of caries (DMFS) 3. Study Design This is a cross sectional survey involving a self administered questionnaire and oral examination. The oral health impact of the respondent was measured using the simple OHIP Malaysia, validated by Saub et al (2005)7. RESULTH 1. Caries Status Mean [ Decayed surface (0.50), Filled surface (1.78), Missing surface (0.79), DMFS (3.07) and Teeth indicated for extraction (0.02) ]. About 4 out of 10 subjects were caries free. Almost similar proportion of subjects had DMFS of 3 or more. 2. Periodontal Status The proportion of subjects who were periodontally healthy was low (5.8%). Overall almost 9 out of 10 first year cadets (89.4%) had calculus present. Almost three quarters of first year cadets needed scaling and oral hygiene instruction (OHI). About 17% needed more complex periodontal treatment due to deep periodontal pocket. 3. Oral Health Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) 4. Individual Impact Discomfort due to food getting stuck is most commonly reported by about a quarter of the subjects.
