To assess the perceived oral health status, satisfaction with oral health and perceived need for treatment among first year cadets in UPNM 2. To assess their level of caries (DMFS) 3. To assess their level of periodontal disease (CPI) and 4. To assess the oral health impact of oral diseases in the group by using the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP). MATERIALS AND METHOD 1. RESULTH 1. Caries Status Mean [ Decayed surface (0.50), Filled surface (1.78), Missing surface (0.79), DMFS (3.07) and Teeth indicated for extraction (0.02) ]. About 4 out of 10 subjects were caries free. Almost similar proportion of subjects had DMFS of 3 or more. 2. Periodontal Status The proportion of subjects who were periodontally healthy was low (5.8%). Overall almost 9 out of 10 first year cadets (89.4%) had calculus present. Almost three quarters of first year cadets needed scaling and oral hygiene instruction (OHI). About 17% needed more complex periodontal treatment due to deep periodontal pocket. 3. Oral Health Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) 4. Individual Impact Discomfort due to food getting stuck is most commonly reported by about a quarter of the subjects. This is followed by ulcer in mouth(7.3%), bad breath(5.8%), and feeling shy(5.5%). 5. Relation between gender, ethnic group, income and oral health status No significant diff

ABSTRACT The aim of the study was to determine the oral health status and oral health impacts among UPNM first year cadets. The objectives of this study were; (1) to assess the perceived oral health status, satisfaction with oral health and perceived need for treatment among first year cadets in UPNM, (2) to assess their level of caries (DMFS), (3) to assess their level of periodontal disease (CPI) and (4) to assess the oral health impact of oral diseases in the group by using the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP). This is a cross-sectional survey of the UPNM first year cadets where data was obtained through oral examination (DMFS and CPI) and self administered questionnaire survey (about demographic, perceived oral health, satisfaction with oral health, perceived treatment need and Oral Health Impact). Three hundred and thirty UPNM first year cadets in Sg Besi campus were involved in this study. The prevalence of caries free and periodontally healthy subjects were 40.6% and 5.8% re
